The role involves managing a Microsoft SQL Server estate comprising approximately 70 servers, including various versions such as Azure SQL. Responsibilities include overseeing automated and ad hoc backups and restores, upgrading SQL Server instances, deploying new servers, monitoring performance and tuning for optimal operation, managing SSIS servers and packages, collaborating with third-party vendors for managed SQL services, aiding in stored procedure creation and modifications, offering guidance and assistance to infrastructure teams on disaster recovery solutions, and creating and managing SQL/Database pipelines using tools like TeamCity and Azure DevOps.
